Aloha Radio

Heralding from the land of surf and sun, it was only natural that Aloha Radio was formed. Aloha Radio is a culmination of all things surf with a mix of songs that any person of any age will enjoy. From high energy Dick Dale inspired tracks featuring the pounding drums and fast picking that made surf rock so popular to catchy Hawaiian style songs that feature lap steel and ukulele, Aloha Radio’s music offers its audience a new and exciting surf experience.

Aloha Radio consists of four permanent members, Lauren Mulderrig on lead vocals, ukulele, and acoustic guitar, Alex Barnett on electric guitar, lap steel and backing vocals, Captin on bass, and Chris Hori on drums and percussion. They are also happy to welcome some special guests on stage from time to time.

In a very short time, this Southern California based band has attracted the attention of music industry executives and producers, professional surfers, surfboard and surf apparel companies, and some of California’s hottest beach clubs and hotspots.

Aloha Radio has rapidly gained a loyal fan base and performed with legendary acts such as: Ben Harper, Donovan Frankenreiter, Weezer, Ziggy Marley, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Cake, The Surfaris, G. Love and Special Sauce, Katchafire, Black Uhuru, Neon Trees, JJ Grey and Mofro, Ken Garcia Band, The Eliminators, Slacktone, Revoltaire, Common Sense and more.

In 2011, the band played over 100 shows and performed at some of California’s landmark venues and festivals including: Doheny Days, Sawdust Festival, Taste of Brews Festival, Rainbow Sandal’s Battle of The Paddle, Surf-a-Rama, Summer Fun on the 101, The Coach House Concert Hall, The Tiki Bar, Boar Cross’n, Dana Wharf Summer Music Cruises, Etnies Skatepark, The Slidebar, Chaffey Theatre, The Mateel Community Center, The Pour House, The Lighthouse, Central SAPC, Tin Can Alehouse, Di’Piazza’s, Saint Rocke, Shorebreak Hotel, Hilton Waterfront Hotel and many others.

Richfolk

With touches of folk, country, gospel, and blues, each of the five members of richfolk take turns at the mic, giving hints of Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker and Waylon Jennings. Hans Sylstra and Chris Lizotte provide honest and heartfelt rhythm guitar, each song is a testament of their love and passion for their craft. Playing a solid lead guitar, Marc Ford knows his place as he subtly enters and exits each song with perfection while never coming off overbearing. With a voice from the heavens, and a soul mate sharing the stage, Kirsten Ford’s angelic harmonies and celestial solos are breathtaking and may actually bring a tear to your eye. Another soul mate, Janine Sylstra is a percussionist that becomes her instrument. She can coax and caress her cajon into a living object that will keep the beat, dance around the room, and drive the passion from her soul straight into the music.

They have a collective experience derived from life’s trials and tribulations and the occasional pain and even loss that comes with it, but the main theme of their music is pure joy and love.

For these five individuals, it is not about what they have, it is what they have to give.

Doheny “Green” Surf Festival to Raise Funds for Southern California State Parks and Beaches

www.surfspot.com

Dana Point, Calif., July 18, 2012 – The Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association (DSBIA), San Onofre Foundation (SOF) and Utopia Entertainment, Inc. are producing the Doheny Surf Festival coming to Dana Point, CA, August 11-12. This fundraising event helps support San Onofre, San Clemente, Trestles and Doheny State Parks. The two-day event, presented by Subaru along with supporting sponsors Kona Brewing and Rubio’s, is an expanded version of the summer surf event that has been held for the last four years. It will include all things Surf: exhibits, woodies, vintage surfboards, music, tandem surfing, nose riding, Outrigger Canoe and SUP demonstrations, Kids’ Corner, environmental and ocean education, state park wildlife, autographs and photo opportunities with surf legends as well as current professionals. A major music lineup includes headliner Eddie Money, as well as Everlast, Fishbone, ALO, Honk, Common Sense, Paula Fuga, Le Blorr plus others will entertain 3,500 concert attendees each day. 20,000 attendees are expected to visit Doheny beach during the two-day event.

“We have loved producing a great event over the past four years,” says DSBIA President Bill Brooks, “We’re very excited to have such great sponsors this year, they all comprehend the importance of keeping these legendary beaches maintained and protected; as does our commissioned Surf Fest logo artist and San Clemente resident Drew Brophy.” Brophy stated, “Doheny and San Onofre State Parks are some of the most enjoyed and valuable surfing areas in California and even the world. I am stoked to participate in anything that preserves these natural playgrounds for our future.”

Nearly 70 State Parks are slated to close in 2012, and the budgets for the remaining Parks are being slashed. The SOF and DSBIA are California non-profit public benefit charitable corporations, dedicated to protecting the treasured State Parks and Beaches of San Onofre, Doheny, Trestles and San Clemente. Although these parks are not on the closure list, SOF and DSBIA depend on donations to preserve and operate these parks for over two million yearly visitors.

“This is a significant effort to show how much appreciation the citizens of California have for their public lands,” says San Onofre Foundation President Steve Netherby. “Every dollar we raise stays right in the local Parks.”

There will be something for everyone in Vendor Village. Beer and wine will be available in the Kona Brewing beer garden; great food fare and beverages will be served by LA Gourmet Food Trucks and eateries that have supported surfing through the years, among them, Daphne’s California Greek, Nalu’s Island Grill and Rubio’s.

“The Surf Festival’s vision is to present the surf culture as a leading edge movement in the world today,” says Jim Kempton, the Festival Director and CEO of the San Onofre Foundation. “This will be a celebration of the surf culture and fun for the entire family and will an example of an environmentally sound event that is endeavoring to be 100 percent carbon neutral. We couldn’t achieve vast awareness without our truly great media partners, Surfer Magazine, Surfline, Playlist 92.7 and the San Clemente Times.”

Doheny State Beach became California’s first state beach on May 31, 1931. Steep in surf culture it remains one of Southern California’s most famous beaches and is one of California’s most popular camping grounds. The beach covers an area of 62 acres and includes a day use surfing beach at the northern end, as well as campgrounds in its southern area.

1st Rodeo

Craig Miller (Bass, Vocals) and Brian O’Brian (Drums) met in high school eons ago. Known as the “A La Carte Rhythm Unit”, their combustible and intuitive attack helped establish the iconic rock trio “A La Carte” as one of the premier attractions on the Southern California concert landscape. As members of a headlining attraction on Hollywood’s infamous Sunset Strip, in a decade not too long ago, Brian and Craig encountered temptations few mortal men could resist, and eventually left the scene for the more pastoral settings of the Deep South, where they drew large Sunday crowds playing for one of the more popular rattlesnake-handling congregations in Tennessee. Having survived numerous near-fatal reptile attacks, they recently returned to their southwest homes, and are currently playing music that does not (often) require ear protection, or body armor.

The songwriting team of David Benn Tyson (Lead Vocals, Guitar) and Kevin Byron Craig (Lead Guitar, Vocals) proudly admits that they are foolish enough to believe that love lost can always be regained. Hopeless romantics, they seek answers to difficult questions like “Why does the singer always go home with the pretty girl, but still wakes up alone?”. Eternal optimists, they muse that the best remedies for a busted relationship are a loyal dog, a good horse, and a fast Harley. Tyson and Craig agree that a man’s hard luck story is never the final chapter. Their deviously-dry humor and keen insight bring a fresh face to generation of music lovers starving for the new voice of Blue-Eyed American Rock.
